In Jan 93 Doug decided to depart the Air Force to enter the business world. The Air Force treated him well – great education, flew jets and traveled extensively. There was nothing better than waking up at O’dark thirty and strapping on a jet. A memorable moment was a sorte flown in the Philippines. With a unique opportunity to fly the wild weasel mission, his squadron trained for many types of air combat - air-to-air, air to ground plus the weasel mission. One morning performing air to air, he was flying due vertical (Yes, that’s sunshine in face and terra-ferma in rear) just waiting to see which airplane would fall first! Why, so the last could fall behind the other and a gain an advantage. That’s about 18,000 feet, no air speed, just the whine of the GE 100’s sucking for air. What a thrill!!!
Ah-h-h, anyway back to the challenging world of logistics. As a Sales Consultant the opportunities to assist a variety of businesses on improving their processes provides great challenge and reward for Doug. Pushing the envelope in logistics is no different than the flying world. Utilizing and implementing new technologies, problem solving and creativity are all similar characteristics.
Doug works with a variety of business disciplines – appliance, automotive, apparel, beverage, electronics, medical, MRO, etc. Our industry is very unique. It offers unique problems allowing personnel growth – education, building business relationships, teamwork and working with great people.
Doug is completely involved with his clients from initial call; discovery session, plant layout, system implementation and startup. His technical area of expertise focuses on assisting clients with optimizing their supply chain. In short this means providing his clients with total supply chain visibility, collaboration with business partners and event/productivity management reporting tools. Solutions range from very simple data collection applications to developing hybrid automated material handling systems that combine advanced information systems, superior material handling technology and sound operational management to execute the client’s strategic business goals.
Memorable moments were designing and implementing the first true manufacturing “use point manager” system. Here utilizing a mini load ASRS, parts are side discharged directly to the operators for assembly. No hunting or searching – just pure manufacturing. Another was assisting with and implementing Exacta’s™ OMS (Enterprise Order Management System) that allows the client total visibility to all inventory and orders. At the same time the client can offer their current or future business partners and retail customers total visibility to their own inventory and orders. A powerful solution offering scalability, flexibility and real time event management, this will provide this client and others a working solution for many years to come.
Doug and his wife Diane are excited to be adopting Mia Catherine from China this winter. Adopting is a great way to start a family! Other activities the family enjoys are football (Penn State Alums), skiing, hiking, biking, traveling – pretty much anything – let’s just go do it!
